If you looked up the definition of a language, you’d find it to be a structured system of communication.  Each language can contain multiple dialects, which can make translation more of an art than a simple act.  With over 7,000 languages spoken on Earth, the need for translation and interpretation of language is ever growing, even with just 23 languages accounting for more than half the world’s population.  If you’ve ever wanted to see the world and speak foreign languages, then the Sno-Isle TECH Translation and Interpretation program is your gateway to travel the world.

About the Class

The Translation and Interpretation class is a perfect opportunity to learn how to use language as a tool to make a living.  Industries like medical, education, and legal settings need bi-lingual employees that can translate between languages.  The program at Sno-Isle TECH is a safe and supportive environment to  learn how to accurately and professionally transfer communication from one language to another in written and verbal form. Students will also develop your a professional portfolio and practice skills through job shadows and internships.  The end goal of the program is to prepare for the Washington Certification Exam and have the opportunity to walk out the door ready to be paid for your hard work.  Students should be bilingual and bi-literate in English and another language and have a minimum of 2.0 credits in English and 2.0 credits in World Language (or equivalent) prior to entering the Translation and Interpretation program.

Meet the Instructor

Isabel Espino is joining Sno-Isle TECH Skills Center to instruct in the Translation and Interpretation program.  Espino has several years of experience working as a Translator/Interpreter in many different fields.  She also has worked for several years as a Para-educator in Everett School District, assisting students in the ELL Department.  Espino is looking forward to teaching students how to use their heritage language to help people understand one another and make a career using native fluency.

In-Depth Class Information

The Translation and Interpretation class is taught twice daily, Monday through Friday during the school year.  The morning session is from 7:55am to 10:25am, while the later session is from 11:10am to 1:40pm.  Students should have the prerequisites of 2.0 credits in English and 2.0 credits in World Language (or equivalent) before enrolling in the class.  The course offers 3.0 High School credits as an elective or CTE/Occ. Ed. Credit.  It can also offer credit for Bellevue College with a passing grade of a B or better.  There is also an additional fee of $46.00 associated.

In the Translation and Interpretation class, students will learn to accurately and professionally transfer communication from one language to another in written and verbal form.  Students will also develop a professional portfolio and practice skills through job shadows and internships before preparing for the Washington Certification Exam.  Students will use both of their languages in class discussions and on assignments.  The program is broken into two semesters to offer the best learning opportunity.  Semester one focuses on the fundamentals of interpreting language, which includes the skills and behaviors needed in a long-term career, the correct terminology to use in a professional settings, and the professional ethics required in a career setting.  The latter half of the first semester will introduce the ten-step translation process with text analysis.   Students will also explore vocational opportunities after high school and/or college with certification, the nature of interpretation work, researching bi-lingual opportunities, and volunteering as an interpreter.  The second semester focuses on practicing translation and interpretation, research, writing thank you letters, applications, and professional records.  Students will also volunteer their interpreting and translating in the school district and the community.
