Sno-Isle TECH Precision Machining Program
Classes | News & Events
Dec 17, 2019

Many of the products you use in your day-to-day activities came from a process including precision machining.  Machinists follow computer-aided models, blueprints, and other designs to make tools that can create products, or make the products directly via machining.  Sno-Isle TECH offers students a chance to learn how raw materials turn into precision finished parts in a program called Precision Machining.

About the Precision Machining Class

Students in the Precision Machining program will learn basic precision machining and CNC skills, which includes planning and making precision finished parts from raw materials.  Machines included in the class are lathes, mills, and CNC (computer numerical control) machines.  Beyond the machining skills achieved, the class also offers problem-solving skills that enhance student performance in every area of life.

This program can be the start of a great career or a vital stepping-stone toward many college degree careers.  This is a nationally known and recognized class, and in many years, the High School Washington State Precision Machining Gold Medalist is a student from this class.  Sno-Isle TECH students have won National Bronze Precision Machining Medals in two different years also.  Some of the opportunities for higher education beyond this program include Engineering and further machining through in-depth study.

Meet the Instructor

Dan Cardiff has recently joined Sno-Isle TECH after years in the machining field supporting aerospace ventures.  Dan will be spearheading the Precision Machining class, bringing more than 7.5 years of machining expertise from the Arlington, WA area.

Precision Machining Program Background

The Precision Machining class at Sno-Isle TECH prepares students to be able to apply technical knowledge and skills in all aspects of shaping metal parts.  Each student will learn to use standardized computations relating to work dimensions and how it relates to tooling and machining.  Instruction emphasizes bench work and the operation of lathes, power saws, milling machines, grinders, drills and computer operated equipment (CNC machines).  Each students can expect to use precision measuring instruments such as layout tools and micrometers and gauges.  The methods of machining and heat treatment of various metals, blueprint reading, and the layout of machine parts are also covered in detail.

The Precision Machining class is offered two times per day, Monday through Friday, from 7:55 AM – 10:25 AM and 1:10 PM – 1:40 PM.  The class is worth 3.0 high school credits per year and offers CTE Dual Credit: Everett Community College, MFG T 104 Machine Operator 1 (20 credits).  Students will learn through split instruction of academic theory and practical applications. In this pursuit, students will be assigned projects, which become more and more advanced as skills are mastered.  Students will have the opportunity to participate in field trips to local manufacturers and machine shops. There will be guest lecturers as well as job coaching and interviewing experiences.

Start to imagine the world through mathematics and spatial orientation.  The world is three-dimensional, and the Precision Machining class will offer the students a chance to utilize material science concerning work holding, machine processing, material removal, inter-part relationships, and fits and tolerances to be successful.   Teamwork is an essential part of success in any industry, and this class will help students by assuming the roles of team members as well as team leaders, and roles related to real world manufacturing environments.  If you’re ready to make new parts from concept art, apply now!
