Snohomish County IT is looking for a Computer Hardware Technician to join our team as a paid intern for up to 12 weeks from April through June 2024. The internship will require a minimum of 20 hours of on-site work per week at our main campus located in downtown Everett, WA.  

The ideal candidate will have basic knowledge in computer software, hardware and peripheral troubleshooting, familiarity with Windows Operating Systems and be enrolled in a computer science degree program. Our paid internship provides an opportunity for students to gain practical experience with imaging and configuration of the Windows Operating System in a high-volume Service Desk environment. The intern will work closely with a team of Service Desk Technicians and Systems Administrators with dozens of years of experience.

SNOHOMISH COUNTY INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
Snohomish County supports internship programs that provide work experience for students in an accredited post-secondary institution that is related to their course of study.  The internship program is designed so that the student will have the opportunity to apply principles and theories learned in the classroom, gain new skills, explore a career path and be supervised and mentored by a professional in their field.

The student may choose to receive scholastic credit for their internship in accordance with the guidelines set by their school.
 
BASIC FUNCTION
The IT Support I – Intern is a computer hardware technician responsible for assisting in building, imaging and configuration of new computer devices using Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager, triaging and troubleshooting computer hardware and peripherals, participating in deployment of computer upgrades, and asset management and inventory.  An intern in this position applies basic ideas and practices to provide routine solutions to problems of limited scope, showing willingness to accept responsibility and communicating effectively. This work is performed at the enterprise level.

 

Job Duties

STATEMENT OF ESSENTIAL INTERNSHIP DUTIES

  1. Applies basic ideas and practices, with limited specialty knowledge related to technology support, maintenance, operation and administration of business applications, systems, networks, and personal productivity devices and network appliances.
  2. Provides routine solutions to problems of limited scope, and enters information into basic word/information processing systems in the area of technology support.
  3.  Demonstrates willingness to accept responsibility in work correlated with technology support, maintenance, operation and administration of business applications, systems, networks, and personal productivity devices and network appliances.
  4. Demonstrates the ability to focus and performs project tasks as directed in projects that incorporate technology support, maintenance, operation and administration of business applications, systems, networks, and personal productivity devices and network appliances.
  5. Closely supervised, follows specific, detailed instructions and basic procedures.
  6. Routinely delivers work to support continuous delivery of services in the area of technology support.
  7. Communicates effectively with others, demonstrating written and verbal skills to convey routine information about technology support.

STATEMENT OF OTHER INTERNSHIP DUTIES
Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Must be able to show proof of enrollment in an accredited post-secondary institution at the time of the Internship.  If the Internship occurs during the summer, the student may either provide proof of summer or fall enrollment.

Must be currently working towards a degree in computer science or closely related field.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Six (6) months of general work experience that includes use of computer preferred; OR any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS  
Must pass criminal background check which includes fingerprinting at the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Increase Intern Knowledge of:

  • the tools, standards, methods, best practices, and industry trends applicable to this specialty (familiarity with).
  • managing and imaging computers within an enterprise using Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager
  • Microsoft Windows operating system and Microsoft Office software
  • use of an enterprise IT service management (ITSM) software, EasyVista
  • use of enterprise IT asset management software, Lansweeper and Microsoft SCCM
  • internal operations of a service desk team

Ability to:

SUPERVISION
The intern is closely supervised and will receive direction from an IT professional as assigned

WORKING CONDITIONS
The work is generally performed in typical office conditions. Customers are primarily internal at the County. Job requires regular contact outside Department of Information Technology. Entails frequent repetitive movements at a computer or business machine. Requires frequent lifting and moving of up to 50 pounds, kneeling, bending, walking and climbing.
